Thing 16
After reading some of the Web 2.0 perspectives, I think libraries and librarians will continue to be stretched. Our users at HPL continue to expect many services-some want the new technology and some prefer the basic book. I think collections will just get more specialized for awhile. Our circulation has not gone down. Patrons utilize our computers heavily and many use the subscription databases and other special sites that the library provides. We are trying to keep up with new technology but have to be selective-not all new things catch on.
Librarians will have to keep up with Web 2.0 expectations. I'm glad OCLC has started to adapt bibliographic data. They need to continue cooperating and use the "many hands" available that can help contribute data. Libraries need a leader that can bring local records together and prevent duplication from publishers, libraries and other bibliographic services.
What I see is more librarians sitting at computers. Some will still have to prepare data and organize information. Others, such as the "To a temporary place in time" article mentioned that "people will still need experienced tour guides" which makes sense to me.
